You’re too early. Fifa World Cup is next year. If you want to come in 2005 anyway, here are some hints. We hope you don’t mind that most of it is links. We can’t really speak for the whole of Germany ourselves…

The musts:

Berlin:

The biggest German city, and the city with the most diverse cultural life. Maybe you want to have a look at the renovated Olympic stadium where the Fifa World Cup’s final will be.

"I don’t think that there is anything in the world that you cannot learn in Berlin - except German." - Mark Twain

Hamburg:

Hamburg is the second-biggest German city and the home of one of the biggest sea harbours in Europe. And as sailors don’t want to be lonesome when they are on shore leave, there is also Europe’s second biggest red light district, the Reeperbahn (also with lots of theatres and "normal" bars).

"Hamburg is not a beautiful city - if you don’t have money." - Dieter Laser, actor

Munich:

The state capital of Bavaria - and the home of most clichés about Germany. One litre glasses of beer, the biggest choice of sausages, Bavarian music - you can find it all.

For catholics (and other people interested):

The World Youth Day in Cologne. http://www.wjt2005.de

Visit:

…in Dortmund:

"Belgium, Finland, Dortmund…" - As you know, Dortmund is the city with most German FEJSers. It used to be the city of coal, steel and beer - but most of this is gone now. Don’t worry, you can still drink beer, but it’s not produced there anymore http://www.city.dortmund.de

Dortmund is part of the Ruhrgebiet (Ruhr Area) - some "smaller" individual cities with 50.000 up to 600.000 people making up one big urban area with more than 5 million people. It’s also an interesting area to see, offering much more than the remains of Germany’s industrial heart.

…in Würzburg:

A nice old (actually most of it was destroyed in WW2, so lets call it "old-looking") city in northern Bavaria, with just 130000 people http://www.wuerzburg.de/system/international/englisch/. The area is known for good wine. You can meet Marcus there till the end of August.

…in Bonn:

The Federal Republic of Germany’s former capital at the river Rhine. Malte will be there till the end of July http://www.bonn.de/index.html?lang=en.

So far for the introduction. If you have any more questions, if you want to find out if you can meet FEJSers in Dortmund or elsewhere when you are here, or if you want to know more for example about concerts or festivals in the region you visit - just contact me: Marcus Kreutler, kreuti@web.de ".
